Jeep ? ?

how do jeeps do on gas ? just estimated ? when a jeep has a 4 cylinder MANUAL transmission|||they are OK but not really great, the 4 wheel drive and weight of a Jeep works against it. at least it is a manual as the automatic is worse. expect 20-22 mpg highway 15-17 city at best,|||I've had 2.5 (4 cyl.), 4.0 6cyl. and now the 3.7 6 cyl. all are not good for gas consumption. expect to average 17 . I don't count the patriot or compass as jeeps, their more like a pt cruiser about the same offroad capability. for the power and simplicity I like the 4.0 best out of all of them.

|||As an owner of several jeeps over the years I say this from experience the YJ/TJ Jeeps with the 4.0L typically get under 19 mpg if you have a very very light foot, realistically 14-16 is a very common figure. The 4 banger gets only slightly 1-2 mpg better in some cases.

|||a 4 cylinder jeep will do pretty good on gas.i would think you could get about 18 mpg city|||17-22 mpg

The 6 cylinder gets the same highway mileage as the 4 banger, although slightly worse city mileage.

An automatic will get 2 mpg less than the manual, so stick with a manual.

I think the best combo is a 6 cylinder manual Wrangler|||There are currently 6 jeeps in the line up. Two are crossover that are not technically Jeeps but re branded Mitsubishi's (compass and patriot). They get great gas mileage (up wards of 30mpg highway). However they do poorly offroad since they are actually cars that resemble an SUVs, conversely they are excellent on road. Those two are the only ones that come with a 4 cylinder engines and before that only the wrangler, liberty and cherokee had them and they weren't that much better than the six cylinder when it comes to gas mileage (low 20's) added to that they were extremely underpowered.

Jeeps or any real offroad vehicle are not good with gas mileage and you should not expect it to be otherwise since offroad ability and gas mileage are exclusive to one another.
