What could be the cause of my 97 Jeep Cherokee being slow to start, starts when accelerated then stalls?

My Jeep has been slow to start and I have waited for friend to be available to work on it (in another town). Now that he is available I cannot take it to him because it won't stay cranked.

The Jeep starts when accelerated then stalls.

Please help!|||Jeeper has given you a good list.

Also check the fuel pump relay. I have had two Jeeps recently in my care that have given similar symptoms. They both were cured with a new fuel pump relay.

|||Could be any number of problems... If you aren't mechanically gifted, you will probably need to have someone that knows what they are doing take a look at it.

A short list of potential problems:

1. Your gas pump is dead (sends enough to start, but can't maintain pressure to keep running).

2. Your ballast resistor is burnt out or wire loose.

3. Clogged fuel filter.

4. TPS is borked (Throttle Position Sensor)

5. Vacuum leak or break

Your Jeep may be throwing an error code which would help you narrow down the problem. If you have a digital odometer, google "engine code digital odometer" and follow the instructions to get an error code reading from your odometer...then google the code to find out what it is.

Good Luck.
