I own a 1999 Jeep cherokee sport. I am wanting to get a suspension lift, and I think I have settled on 3inches. BUT wherever I look, some places say Cherokee XJ, while others only say Cherokee, and some say both. I thought they were the same. If not, how do you tell the difference?|||You have an XJ Cherokee. XJ is just the more specific code for the body/chassis style. It's important because there were also XJ Grand Wagoneers for a while. Other than the wood paneling and upgraded trim, they were identical to an XJ Cherokee.
Also, there were Cherokees prior to the XJ referred to as FSJ (full size jeep) Cherokees that are not compatible in any way with your XJ.|||Well they started making "fullsize cherokees" in the 60s untill the 80s and called it a jeep SJ. From 1984 to 2001 the downsized cherokee (the one you have) was called the cherokee xj or just xj. From 1993 to 1998 they made a Grand Cherokee which was a ZJ. And from 1999-2004 was a grand cherokee wj. When ordering parts pay attention to the year.|||Your Jeep Cherokee is an XJ. For a three inch lift I recommend the one form JC Whitney. It cost right around $100 and comes with new springs for the front and an extra leaf for the rear. I have this lift on my XJ and I have installed another on my friends Cherokee.

http://mikestrawbridge.com/jeep-cherokee鈥?/a>|||cherokee is XJ, they all have a two letter code. cherokee = xj, 87-95 wrangler = yj, 97-06 wrangler tj, new wrangler jk, comanche mj, scrambler cj8, full size jeeps are sj. I probably missed a few. you have a xj.
|||They are the same thing. A Cherokee is a XJ. Just like a Grand Cherokee is either a ZJ or WJ depending on year.|||Be careful though because when people talk on the net alot refer to thier Grand Cherokees as just Cherokees.. which they arent and can be confusing. Other than that yes Cherokees are XJs...
http://www.Cherokeeforum.com|||unless its a grand cherokee that = ZJ
