What would cause a jeep to shake and backfire when you start the jeep?

My Parents own a 2001 Jeep Cherokee it has a 4.0 leader engine. when they put the keys in the ignition to start the jeep it shakes hard and back fires and then when you shut the key off and restart the jeep its okay. it does it every once in awhile What would cause that?|||Possibly some moisture or damage in the distributor cap or messed up spark plugs or wires.|||Check out your Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) and Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) valves.

See links below for detailed information:|||Sounds like the distributor cap might have a small crack running down the side of it,allowing moister to get inside of it. Replace the cap.
