Can a jeep wrangler run 35 inch tires with the stock gears?

I'm putting 35x12.50 mud tires on my 2002 wrangler. Does it need to be regeared to push the larger tires? The jeep is a 5 speed with a 4.0L inline 6 motor.|||Sure you can if you wish for your Jeep not to be able to get out of it's own way.|||The tire size you have chosen is a little bit large. To compensate you really should get it re-geared. Also, you should take into consideration that if you are sitting with a stock suspension you are going to be rubbing all over the place and if you hit a bump that fully compresses your tire into the wheel well, you are going to bend sheet metal. To properly clear 35" tires and get full articulation you need at least a 4" lift and a 1" body lift. Before you order anything you should contact the maker of the lift that you are considering and ask them if 35's will fit and allow full compression. All lift manufacturers know their own product best, so call around before you buy.|||You will be able to drive, but it will be a dog. Obviously, your speedometer will be way off, and you will find yourself having to downshift a lot more than you used to in order pass or accelerate with any gumption at all. Offroad it will suck, hands down.

But if it's a matter of available funds at the moment, just get the tires, drive it around, and then get new gears when you can afford it.|||You do not have to re gear it to drive it but your mpg will drop and so will the off the line power.

I have a 4 banger 91 TJ on 35's with stock gears. It is a dog, but it still gets there eventually.

I would suggest you save up for gears once you install 35's so you get some of the original power back
